Hunar Baig, 86, is not just a living legend—he is also the grandfather of Nawaz, one of the region’s most respected high-altitude porters and guides. Over his remarkable career, Hunar has summited some of the world’s most prestigious peaks, including K2, Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum I, and Gasherbrum II.

He climbed Gasherbrum I alongside the legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner, and also ascended with Jim Whittaker, the first American to reach Everest in 1963. In 1978, Jim Whittaker led the first American ascent of K2, with Hunar Baig serving as a high-altitude porter.

This incredible story is recounted in the book The Last Step: The American Ascent of K2 (Legends and Lore) by Rick Ridgeway, who was also part of the expedition. During that climb, Hunar famously fell into a crevasse but miraculously escaped with only minor injuries.
